Brampton Resident Charged in Lottery Scam

Region of Peel – Investigators from the Fraud Bureau have arrested and charged a man concerning an alleged Lottery Scam, which targeted vulnerable elderly victims from across Canada from 2018 to 2022.

On Friday, February 3, 2023, a criminal investigation concluded after multiple elderly victims were contacted by phone and convinced that they had won a lottery sweepstakes. The victims were instructed to send funds to cover fees to collect their winnings. The victims were promised millions of dollars in cash and vehicles. 

The fraud totals more than $200,000.00.

Investigators from the Fraud Bureau have arrested and charged 27-year-old Javaune Ledgister from Brampton. He was arrested and charged with the following offense:

• Possession of Property Obtained by Crime 

Javaune Ledgister was released on an Undertaking and is to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton on March 27, 2023, in answer to the charge.

The Fraud Bureau protects individuals, groups, and vulnerable persons in our community. Our most vulnerable population are often targeted, manipulated, and taken advantage of in many fraud-related schemes for the fraudster's profit.

Investigators believe that there may be more victims within the GTA and beyond.
