Mississauga – Peel Regional Police 11 Division Police Community Liaison Committee is hosting its 24^th Annual Open House thisSaturday, May 25, 2013, at 11 Division, 3030 Erin Mills Parkway from 10 am to 2 pm.

The Open House is a day reserved for the community to come out, meet the officers and have a tour of the division. There will be jail photos, a bouncy castle, games, a BBQ and music. We will have our specialized bureaus on display and there will be a number of our community partners on display, including, Mississauga Fire, Peel Paramedics, University of Toronto Police, Animal Services, Crime Stoppers, Parking Enforcement and many more.

Peel Police - Peel Officers to be Honoured by Governor-General

(BRAMPTON) – “Chief Jennifer Evans and Superintendent Brian Adams will be in Ottawa on Friday, May 24, 2013, to be recognized for their outstanding contribution to policing in Canada”, says Mr. Emil Kolb, Chair of the Regional Municipality of Peel Police Services Board. Details of the event and the Order of Merit for Police Services are set out in the attached media release.

“On behalf of the Board, our Regional Council, and every resident of the Region of Peel, I want to offer congratulations to Chief Evans and Superintendent Adams for this significant achievement,” says Mr. Kolb. “This reflects well on them, and it also reflects on our entire organization, which is committed to the delivery of police services at the highest level.”

Mr Kolb says the Peel Regional Police believes in being a leader, innovator and a partner in policing in Canada.

Peel Police - Missing 76 Year-Old Female Located

Brampton – Investigators from the 22 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau are advising the public that a missing 76 year-old female has been located.

Cynthia ASSAM was located earlier today by police and returned to the care of her family.

Peel Police - Missing 76 Year-Old Female from Brampton

Brampton – Investigators from the 22 Division Criminal Investigations Bureau are seeking the public’s assistance in locating a missing 76 year-old female.

Cynthia ASSAM was last seen at approximately 7:00 a.m., on Saturday, May, 18, 2013, at her family’s residence on Deerpark Crescent in Brampton. It is believed that she had left the residence for a walk, and she has not been heard from since.

Mrs. ASSAM is visiting from Trinidad and she may have lost her way during her walk. She is physically fit and is known to walk for long periods of time.

Mrs. ASSAM is described as female, black, 5’7” tall, approximately 145 pounds, with shoulder length grey hair. She was last seen possibly wearing a red shirt, a long red skirt with prints on it.

Peel Police - Police Exemplary Service Medal / Bar & Civilian Recognition Awards Ceremony

Peel - On Thursday, May 16, 2013, Exemplary Service Medals and Bars were awarded to thirty-six (36) Peel Regional Police Officers in a ceremony in Mississauga. The medals are presented to members who have completed 20 years of exemplary service, and the bars to members who have achieved 30 years of exemplary service. Twenty (20) civilian members also received Recognition Awards for 20, 30 and 40 years of service.

The Police Exemplary Service Medal was created in 1982, by the Government of Canada, to recognize long and outstanding service in high risk professions providing public security. The medals are presented annually by the members of the Regional Municipality of Peel Police Services Board, on behalf of the Governor General.

The Honourable Justice Ian Cowan, of the Ontario Court of Justice, members of the Regional Municipality of Peel Police Services Board and members of the Chief’s Management Group presented this year’s awards.

Chair Emil Kolb, of the Regional Municipality of Peel Police Services Board states: “I sincerely believe that it is important that we all recognize the dedication and sacrifice that each of these select individuals made in order to reach this milestone, along with the dedication and sacrifices made by their families. To all of them I wish to pass on our thanks and congratulations. Their professionalism, integrity and courage have had a positive influence on the lives of both our residents and our community”.

Peel Police - Launch of Peel Regional Police Mobile Website

Peel – In continuing our efforts to strengthen and enhance our community connections, the Peel Regional Police is proud to announce the launch of its mobile-friendly website.

The mobile website will provide visitors with the same information as the “home-version” Peel Regional Police website.

The Peel Regional Police mobile website has been optimized for use with the latest operating systems on most mobile devices.

From the website, users will be able to submit reports directly to police via their mobile devices. These reports are reviewed and entered into police records and then assigned to investigators in the appropriate area.

As with the “home-version” website, citizens will be able to report the following types of incidents on their mobile devices:

- Lost Property, with a total value under $5,000.00
- Theft, with a total value under $5,000.00
- Theft from Vehicle, with a total value under $5,000.00
- Damage / Mischief to property
- Damage / Mischief to a vehicle
- A follow-up to a previous report
- ROAD WATCH© – Driving Complaints

Certain types of occurrences cannot be accepted online, such as crimes for which there is suspect information, any fail to remain vehicle collisions, or when reporting lost or stolen government identification.

Members of the public will need to continue to report these incidents to police by traditional means.

Mobile website users will also enjoy the convenience of “find nearest station” capabilities along with directions to the closest station to their current location.

The mobile website will also give users access to “Peel Crime Stoppers” (www.peelcrimestoppers.ca) to report information on a crime.

Peel Regional Police worked with eSolutions to bring users a high quality fully operational mobile experience. Users will get the best of both worlds, the functionality of a desktop in the convenience of a mobile device.

Peel Police - Suspects Sought in Wedding Theft

Mississauga – Investigators from the 12 Division Criminal Investigations Bureau, are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying two suspects involved in a theft of wedding gifts.

On Saturday, May 4, 2013, the victim and her husband hosted their wedding reception at the Versailles Banquet Hall, located at 6721 Edwards Boulevard in Mississauga. Sometime during the reception a bag containing the gifts, most of them monetary, was stolen from the hall.

Two suspects have been identified as uninvited guests and police are seeking assistance in identifying them. The first suspect is described as male, Asian, 28-32 years-old and approximately 5’8” tall with an average build. He has short hair and a light beard, and was last seen wearing a light grey suit with a light blue shirt and tie.

The second suspect is described as male, Asian, 30 year-old and 6’ tall with an average build. He has short black hair and a light beard, and was last seen wearing a black suit with a maroon shirt and tie.

Peel Police - Cst. James Ochakovsky Memorial Soccer Tournament

Peel – The Peel Regional Police will be hosting the fourth annual James Ochakovsky Memorial Soccer Tournament. All proceeds from the tournament will be donated to the Trillium Gift of Life Network and Sick Kids Foundation.

This year’s tournament will see teams from several neighbouring emergency services and partner agencies including: Toronto Police Service, Waterloo Police Service, Peel Paramedics, Toronto West Detention Centre, the RCMP and various Peel Regional Police teams.

Chief Jennifer Evans will be in attendance, along with the Honourable Bal Gosal and Brampton City Councillor Vicky Dhillon from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm. They will be participating in a ceremonial kick-off at 2:00 pm.

The tournament kicks off at 8:00 am with the championship game scheduled to be played at 4:15 p.m.

Peel Police - Human Remains Located Identified as Missing Brampton Teen

Peel – Investigators from the Peel Regional Police along with the VANISHED Task Force have been notified that human remains located in the Niagara River were that of Mila JOHNSON.

Mila JOHNSON was last seen on August 3, 2012, leaving her Orenda Court residence in Brampton.

On August 17, 2012 unidentified female human remains were located in the Niagara Region, Canada.

Through extensive DNA testing, the remains have been positively identified as that of 16 year old Mila JOHNSON of Brampton.

Investigators do not suspect foul play in the death of Miss Mila JOHNSON.

Peel Police - CYBER BULLYING AWARENESS GALA

Peel - Peel Regional Police and the Peel Internet Safety Committee have recognized that cyber bullying affects school climates and student’s lives, and can have devastating effects.

The Internet Safety Committee is comprised of representatives from Peel Police, Dufferin Peel Catholic District School Board, Peel District School Board, Peel Health, Brampton Safe City, Safe City Mississauga, Caledon OPP and the University of Toronto Police. The committee created a new program to not only re-enforce cyber bullying awareness, but to empower students to help each other. The program initially was designed to empower bystander intervention and soon became known as “What if Everyone Did Something?”, a campaign to stop cyber bullying.

Peel Police Crime Prevention applied to the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services for a government grant through the Proceeds of Crime. Peel Police, in cooperation with the Internet Safety Committee, received funding to assist the school boards in their valuable message. Part of the funding from this grant was used to launch a Poster Video competition within the pilot schools.

The students were asked to create a poster or a short video demonstrating “What If Everyone Did Something?” to stop cyberbullying. The winner of this competition will have their poster or video displayed throughout the region of Peel in either bus shelters, on bus posters or video trailers to be shown in the Cineplex theatres prior to movies.

On Thursday, May 16, 2013, a Competition Gala is being thrown in honour of all of the students whose poster/video submissions advanced to the final stage of judging.

Community partners and members of the Internet Safety Committee, teachers, principals and police will be attending this event to celebrate the efforts and achievements of our youth. The Gala is designed to encourage students to “Be the Change” and will include student guest speakers who have already taken steps toward the change.

On May 16, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. we are inviting all media to our “What If Everyone Did Something?” Poster/video competition gala, which will take place at the University of Toronto Mississauga Campus, CCT building, Room 1080, 3359 Mississauga Road, Mississauga.

Zhania GILPIN was last seen at a residence on Zebra Trail in Brampton, at approximately 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 14, 2013.

GILPIN is described as female, black, 5’6” tall, 210 lbs., with a heavy build, and short black hair. She was last seen wearing a black t-shirt with a white coloured imprint of a face on it, blue jeans, green and purple “DC” high-top sneakers, and she may be wearing glasses.

Peel Police - Investigators Seek Public's Assistance in Identifying Robbery Suspect

Mississauga - Investigators from the Robbery Bureau are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect responsible for a Robbery.

On Tuesday, March, 5, 2013, at approximately 09:50 a.m., two male suspects entered the Mr Convenience store at 1474 Pickwick Drive. One suspect made a demand for money and a second brandished a firearm. A quantity of cash, lottery tickets and cigarettes were removed and the suspects made good their escape. The victims were not injured during the robbery.

Suspect one is described as male Middle Eastern, 5’10” tall, 130 pounds, brown eyes, with short black wavy hair and a full beard.

Suspect two is described as male Middle Eastern 5’8” tall, 150 pounds, Brown eyes, with straight black hair and a thin beard.

Peel Police - Witnesses Sought in Serious Fail to Remain

Brampton – Investigators from the Major Collision Bureau are appealing for witnesses to a serious fail to remain, where a cyclist was struck and seriously injured.

On Monday, April 8, 2013, at approximately 8:15 p.m., a red two door, older model, medium sized sedan was travelling in the intersection of Queen Street at Rutherford Road in Brampton. At the same time, a cyclist was also in the area of the intersection when he was struck by this vehicle. The suspect vehicle made no attempt to stop and fled the scene on Rutherford Road.

The cyclist, a 51 year-old male from Brampton, was transported to a Toronto trauma centre with serious injuries to his back, pelvis and legs.

Investigators are appealing for witnesses to the collision, or to the actions of the driver of the red suspect vehicle, prior to the collision.

Peel Police - Search Warrant Results in Drug Seizure in Mississauga

Brampton– The Peel Regional Police Street Crime Gang Unit conducted an investigation which led them to the seizure of several kilograms of cocaine.

On Thursday, May 9, 2013 investigators observed a drug purchase and shortly thereafter stopped a vehicle in Brampton, where a half a kilogram of cocaine was located.

Police subsequently arrested Mahesh BEDI, a 35 year-old Brampton resident. He is charged with Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking (Cocaine) and appeared Friday, May 10, 2013, before the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton.

On Friday, May 10, 2013 further investigation led to the execution of a search warrant at a Mississauga residence on Bala Drive. This culminated in seizure of an additional 2.6 kilograms of cocaine.

Police arrested Jamie GIRALDO, a52 year-old, Mississauga resident. He was charged with Trafficking a Controlled Substance (Cocaine), and Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking (Cocaine). He was held in custody and appeared at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton.

GIRALDO’s wife, Janeth GONZALEZ, 51 years of age, also of Mississauga was arrested and charged with Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking (Cocaine). She was held in custody and appeared at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton.

The total amount of Cocaine seized is 3.1 kilograms with an estimated street value of $150,000.

In addition, currency in the amount of $9,570 (CAN) and $337 (USD) was seized as Proceeds of Crime.

Peel Police - POLICE RECRUIT GRADUATION CEREMONY

Peel - On Monday, May 13, 2013, at 2:00 p.m., twenty-seven (27) Peel Regional Police recruits will be sworn in as Constables by the Honourable Mr. Justice Ian Cowan. The ceremony will be held at the Emil V. Kolb Centre for Police Excellence, located at 180 Derry Road East, Mississauga.

The new officers have successfully completed a total of 20 weeks of training at the Ontario Police College and the Peel Regional Police Training Bureau. Mr. Emil Kolb, Chair of the Regional Municipality of Peel Police Services Board, and Justice Ian Cowan will be in attendance. Deputy Chief Chris McCord will present the officers with their badges.

Following the graduation the officers will be assigned to training officers at operational divisions, where they will enter the final phase of their training.

Peel – Peel Regional Police will be joining our policing partners across the country for Canada Road Safety Week which will run for 8 consecutive days, starting May 13, 2013.

Canada Road Safety Week is an initiative of the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA), and part of Transport Canada’s Road Safety Strategy 2015. Road Safety Strategy 2015 has as its goal; to make Canada’s roads the safest in the world.

Canada Road Safety Week will run from May 13, 2013, to May 20, 2013. This enforcement initiative will target all rules of the road and driving laws.

This year the emphasis of the Canada Road Safety Week will be on the “Big 4”, impaired operation by alcohol or drug, failure or improper use of seatbelts, aggressive driving and distracted driving.

The ultimate objective of the initiative is to reduce fatalities and injuries on Canadian roadways.

Canada Road Safety Week will also include an educational component to raise public awareness regarding the importance of defensive, safe driving behaviours.

Peel - Peel Regional Police are holding their annual Police Day event on Saturday, May 11, 2013, at the Emil V. Kolb Centre for Police Excellence. This event is held to showcase the work that the men and women of Peel Regional Police do to keep our Region safe. It is also part of our commitment to building strong, safe communities by forging solid relationships with our citizens.

The Police Day event is open to the public, and offers a number of activities and events for children of all ages. There will be displays from various police units, including Tactical & Rescue, the Marine Unit, Crime Prevention, Internet Safety and more. Kids can also be fingerprinted, have their face painted and jump around in the bouncy tent.

There is limited parking available at the event so members of the public are encouraged to park their vehicles at Peel Regional Police’s Headquarters, 7750 Hurontario Street, Brampton. From this location a shuttle bus will move visitors to and from the Emil V. Kolb Centre. Buses will begin transporting visitors at 10:00 a.m., and will continue on the half hour interval, with the last bus returning back to headquarters at 2:45 p.m.

There is no need for you to identify yourself upon dropping off your items.

The Peel Regional Police will be displaying many of its specialized capabilities including Canine Unit, Explosives Disposal Unit and Marine unit. Other Airport agencies such as the GTAA Fire Department and Emergency Services, Canada Border Services, Wildlife Control, Transport Canada,Peel Paramedics and Public Health Canada will also have displays.

Peel Police - Firearm, Drugs and Currency Seized in Brampton

Brampton– The Peel Regional Police Street Crime Gang Unit, with the assistance from officers in the S.T.E.P. (Strategic and Tactical Enforcement Policing) program, executed search warrants at two residences in Brampton. Investigators subsequently located a quantity of drugs, cash and a firearm.

During an investigation into gang activity in Brampton, officers observed certain illegal behavior that led to the apprehension of a male who was in possession of illicit drugs. This investigation led to further arrests and the subsequent execution of search warrants at residences on Glencairn Square and Silver Maple Court in Brampton.

Police arrested Joshua COOMBS, a 21 year-old, and his common-law spouse, Jacylou OCAMPO, 22 years of age, both of Brampton. Both are facing numerous drug, firearm and proceeds of crime charges, and are beingheld in custody pending a Special Bail Hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton.

Mikhail LEE, a 19 year-old resident of Vaughan, is charged with Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking (Cocaine) and Possession of a Controlled Substance. He was released on a Promise to Appear with a court date of June 6, 2013, at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton.

The total street value of the drugs confiscated is estimated at $42,000.

In addition, in excess of $10,000 Canadian currency was seized as Proceeds of Crime, along with a fully loaded .45 calibre Taurus semi-automatic pistol.

Mississauga – Investigators from the 12 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau are seeking the public’s assistance in locating a missing 52 year-old male.

Edward COOLEN was last seen at Trillium Hospital, located on Queensway, at approximately 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 3, 2013. His medical condition requires him to have constant long term medical care and he may not have his medications with him.

Edward COOLEN is described as male, white, 5’5” tall, 200 lbs., with short black hair, and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a black vest blue jeans and a dark coloured winter jacket.

Peel Police - 2013 Distracted Driving Campaign Results

Peel – The 2013 Distracted Driver Campaign which launched Monday, April 22, 2013, and ended Sunday, April 28, 2013, resulted in officers laying 343 charges to drivers in relation to distracted driving.

Distracted driving is a critical traffic issue that impacts the entire Region of Peel. Peel Regional Police launched this campaign to address this threat to road safety. The goal of this service wide campaign is to improve road safety by reducing the incidents of distracted driving. This campaign offers a proactive approach towards the reduction of collisions.

Objectives of the campaign:

Apply a zero tolerance approach towards distracted driving.
Reduce the number of serious collisions due to distracted driving.
Improve road safety, driving performance and awareness by discouraging drivers from engaging in distracted driving behaviors.

After a week of enforcement, 343 Provincial Offence Notices have been issued to drivers and when compared to the results of the 2012 Distracted Driving Campaign; this is an increase of 6 percent in tickets issued.

Drivers and pedestrians are reminded that road safety is a shared responsibility.

Peel Police - "Help Promote a Safe City and Put a FREEZE on Crime" Contributing to a Safe City for you to live, work and play!

Peel –Recognizing the importance of supporting a child's thirst for knowledge, Operation Freeze 2013 is a partnership with Mac's Convenience Stores encouraging kids to learn that "doing the right thing" is also the "cool thing to do".

This Positive Ticketing initiative will allow officers to engage young people who are observed doing random acts of kindness or exhibiting positive behaviour. The ticket is actually a coupon valid for a free 710 ml Froster beverage at all participating Mac's stores across Ontario.

The Peel Regional Police is pleased to participate in this highly successful initiative that recognizes youth for responsible and caring behaviour. Partnering with local business and engaging our youth in a positive manner builds partnerships that make our communities stronger.

In addition to recognizing good behaviour by youth, Operation Freeze 2013 offers opportunities for police officers to interact with youth in a positive manner. In support of the Positive Ticketing Program, some police officers may again use the coupons to recognize youth for wearing bicycle helmets, doing good deeds, participating in community activities, picking up trash, deterring crime or observing school crossing rules - while others may use the coupons as literal "icebreakers" to establish a rapport with kids in their patrol area. The intention is to ensure that the "Positive Tickets" legitimately reinforce the positive behaviour exhibited by a youth, by offering something of value.

Since the introduction of the Mac’s Positive Ticketing Program in the summer of 2007, more than 800,000 Operation Freeze and Operation Heat coupons have been strategically issued by police officers to recognize and motivate Ontario's youth for positive behaviour.

Frank URBISCI was last seen at his residence, located in the area of Erindale Station Road and Dundas Street West, at approximately twelve noon on Monday, April 29, 2013.

Frank URBISCI is described as male, white, 5’2” tall, 137 lbs, thin build, with short balding grey hair, and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a blue and white checkered shirt, dark blue sweater with black elbow patches, a navy blue jacket, green pants, black boots and a grey hat.

Peel Regional Police Participates in National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week

Peel – Last week, members of Peel Regional Police participated in the Trillium Gift of Life Network’s Gift of 8 Movement Workplace Initiative, by holding a donor consent registration drive.

After a week long campaign, 985 employees, friends and family have visited our dedicated campaign page https://beadonor.ca/peelregionalpolice to register their consent for organ and tissue donation or check their registration status. This number far exceeds our initial goal of 500 visits.

“We are very proud of the level of participation from our members” said Inspector Marc Andrews. “Trillium Gift of Life made it easy for us to play a vital part in saving lives in Ontario and our participation in this initiative was a great way to engage our members and community partners in a cause that’s meaningful, yet doesn’t require a large amount of time or financial commitment”.

Organ donation in Ontario has tremendous support, but while 80 percent of Ontarians say that giving consent for organ and tissue donation in advance is very important to them, fewer than 25 percent have actually registered.

“Encouraging more Ontarians to register as organ and tissue donors is critically important because too many Ontarians die before receiving the organ transplant they need,” said Ronnie Gavsie, President and CEO of Trillium Gift of Life Network. “When we launched beadonor.ca in 2011, we made it easier for Ontarians to register their consent. Now, by bringing this awareness into the workplace, we are making it even easier for organizations like Peel Regional Police to engage their members and to make a difference in the lives of others.”

Trillium Gift of Life Network is a not-for-profit agency of the Government of Ontario. It is responsible for planning, promoting, coordinating and supporting organ and tissue donation for transplantation across Ontario and for improving the system so that more lives can be saved.

Peel Police - Peel Regional Police Announce Developments in 2011 Armed Robbery Investigation

Peel – Peel Regional Police Inspector Colleen Fawcett, Officer-in-Charge of Crimes Against Property and Robbery, addressed the media regarding arrests made in Project Early-Bird, a joint robbery investigation.

In December 2012, an informal joint forces investigation, involving Peel Regional Police, Halton Regional Police, Hamilton Police Service, Waterloo Regional Police and Toronto Police, was commenced after a series of 4 early morning takeover robberies of several financial institutions between September 2011 and November 2012.

During this lengthy investigation police were able to identify the suspects, resulting in them being able to divert an alleged armed robbery of an armoured vehicle from taking place.

In the early morning hours of Wednesday, April 24, 2013, investigators arrested and charged three suspects in connection with this attempted robbery and 4 other separate robberies.

Arrested and charged are Daniel ANTWI, a 27 year-old resident of Mississauga, Jabourou ABDOULKADER, a 26 year-old resident of Toronto, and Nasser ABDOULKADER,a 21 year-old Brampton resident. All 3 accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton on Wednesday April 24, 2013, and are being held in custody pending their next court appearance.

Charges for each suspect are listed below.

Peel Police - Male Wanted in Rockhill Road Shooting

Mississauga – Investigators from the 21 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau have issued a warrant for the arrest of a suspect in the April 12, 2013 shooting of a male on Rockhill Road in Mississauga.

On Friday, April 12, 2013, at approximately 8:20 p.m., police received a 911 call for a shooting in the area of Rockhill Road. When police arrived they located an 18 year-old Mississauga male suffering from several gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to a Toronto area trauma center in critical condition. He was later upgraded to stable condition.

Police have arrested two parties that were involved in the shooting. 20 year-old Shaquille POTTS, of Mississauga and 18 year-old Nicholas ST. LOUIS, of Toronto have been arrested and charged with one count of Conspiracy to Commit Murder and Attempt Murder.

A warrant for the arrest of 26 year-old Travis WALKER of Mississauga has been issued for Conspiracy to Commit Murder and Attempt Murder.

Investigators would like to remind the public that it is an offence under the Criminal Code of Canada to assist a person who is known to be wanted by the police. Anyone found harbouring, aiding or abetting Mr. WALKER, could face serious criminal charges.

Peel Police - Arrest Made in Historical Sexual Abuse Investigation

Peel - Investigators from the Special Victims Unit have arrested a man in relation to a historical sexual abuse investigation.

The alleged offences involve a male teen, which began when the teen was 11 years of age and span over a period of approximately 5 years, beginning around the fall of 2006. The accused and victim were known to each other, as the accused was the victim’s next door neighbour.

On Wednesday, June 20, 2012, police charged Luis LIMA, 60 years-old of Mississauga, with Sexual Assault, Sexual Interference and Invitation to Sexual Touching.

Mr. LIMA appeared at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton on July 23, 2012, to answer to the charges.

Further investigation has led police to believe that there may be additional victims. The sexual assaults took place at a townhouse complex at 725 Vermouth Avenue in Mississauga.

Peel Police - Two Firearms Seized at Search Warrant

Brampton – The Peel Regional Police Street Crime Gang Unit have completed an investigation that resulted in the seizure of two (2) firearms, ammunition, prohibited magazine clips, and drugs.

On Wednesday, April 24^th, 2013 just before midnight investigators executed a search warrant at a Brampton residence on Cashel Street in relation to an investigation. Within the home, officers located and seized the following:

- CZ 858 Semi-Automatic 7.62 rifle;

- 2 prohibited magazine clips each containing 30 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition;

- 120 additional rounds of 7.62mm ammunition;

- Browning 12 gauge sawed off shotgun;

- 38 rounds of 12 gauge ammunition; and,

- 8 grams of cocaine.

Brampton residents Yassine NAHI, 22 year-old, and his brother Zakaria NAHI, 18 year-old, were arrested and charged with numerous firearm offences. Yassine NAHI also faces additional charges of drug trafficking and is under a firearm prohibition order for previous criminal misconduct.

Both accused are being held in custody pendinga Special Bail Hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton.

Peel Police - Two Million Dollars, Worth of Property and Illicit Drugs Recovered

Brampton – Investigators from the Commercial Auto Crime Unit with assistance from Intelligence Services, have recovered approximately two million dollars in stolen property and one hundred and thirty thousand dollars in illicit drugs including heroin and oxycotin.

Officers initiated an investigation into the theft of several trailer loads of stolen cargo including liquor from numerous locations within Peel Region in April.

Search warrants were executed April 23, 2013 at various locations in Brampton, Mississauga and Kitchener.

As a result of the investigation four individuals have been arrested.

Haripal NAGRA, 37 years-old, of Brampton, Ravi SHANKER 50 years-old of Brampton, Amarpal DHILLON, 24 years-old of Brampton and Azadali DAMANI 58 years-old of Kitchener, Ontario have been arrested and charged with 54 criminal and drug related charges. They will all appear in a Brampton Ontario Court of Justice on April 24, 2013, to answer to the charges.

Peel Police - Party Wanted for Firearms Offences

Brampton – The Peel Regional Police Criminal Investigations Bureau advises that a Canada Wide Warrant for 12 Firearms related offences has been issued for Jermaine DYER.

Mr. DYER was observed discharging a firearm between two apartment buildings on Hanover Road, Brampton, putting members of the public in danger. A search warrant for the accused’s residence was obtained, and revealed a loaded .22 calibre revolver and 30 rounds of ammunition. A warrant for the arrest of Jermaine DYER has also been issued.

Peel Police - Distracted Driving Campaign

Peel – Distracted driving is a critical traffic issue that impacts the entire Region of Peel. Peel Regional Police are launching a campaign to address this threat to road safety. The enforcement campaign will commence on April 22^nd and conclude on April 28^th. The goal of this service wide campaign is to improve road safety by reducing the incidents of distracted driving. This campaign offers a proactive approach towards the reduction of collisions.

Objectives of the campaign include:

Apply a zero tolerance approach towards distracted driving.

Reduce the number of serious collisions due to distracted driving.
Improve road safety, driving performance and awareness by discouraging drivers from engaging in distracted driving behaviors.

Peel Police - Young Offender Arrested in Darcel Shooting

Mississauga – Investigators from the 21 Division Criminal Investigations Bureau have arrested a 16 year-old young offender in relation to a shooting incident on Darcel Avenue.

On Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at approximately 2:00 p.m. police received a 911 call for a shooting in the area of Darcel Avenue, in Mississauga. When police arrived they located a 19 year-old Mississauga male, suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a Toronto area trauma center in critical condition.

The victim has since been upgraded to stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.

The young offender was located at his residence on Wednesday, April 17, 2013. He was arrested without incident.

The young offender is charged with Attempted Murder and numerous Firearms related charges. He appeared at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton for a bail hearing Thursday, April 18, 2013.

Due to the age of the accused, his name cannot be released as per the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Peel – Investigators from Peel Regional Police’s Special Victims Unit have issued a warrant for a 54 year old male charging him with sexual assault related offences, which occurred over a 4 month time frame, in the Region of Peel.

Mehdi MIRZA ALI, 54 of Brampton is wanted on the following charges, in relation to a fifteen year old girl;

Mr. Mehdi MIRZA ALI worked as a volunteer driver for Milestone Foster Homes, the Peel Children’s Aid Society and the Toronto Catholic Children’s Aid Society, driving children in their care to appointments throughout the greater Toronto area.

Investigators spoke with Mr. Mehdi MIRZA ALI and arrangements were made to turn himself in on April 5, 2013, however he failed to attend. Information received is that the accused may have fled the country on April 6, 2013.

Due to his position, investigators are concerned there may be other victims and are asking the public to report any similar inappropriate sexual contact they may have had with Mr. Mehdi MIRZA ALI.

Peel Police - Male Shot Several Times in Malton Survives

The victim has since been upgraded to stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.

Investigators are appealing for witnesses in relation to this shooting. Police do not have any suspect information for release at this time.

Peel Police - Missing 46 Year-Old Female

Brampton – Investigators from the 22 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau are seeking the public’s assistance in locating a missing 46 year-old female.

Cheryl MCNIVEN was last seen at 60 Sparklett Crescent in Brampton, at approximately 8:15 a.m. on Thursday, April 11, 2013.

Ms. MCNIVEN is described as female, white, 5’2” tall, approximately 130 pounds, with long dark hair. She was last seen wearing a black hoodie.

Ms. MCNIVEN has no access to a vehicle and is known to frequent the Heart Lake area of Brampton.

Police and family members are concerned for the safety of Ms. MCNIVEN because this is completely out of character for her.

Peel Police - 3rd Annual Family Violence Press Conference Videos

Peel – Social Services Network, in partnership with the Peel Regional Police, would like to thank the media for attending the press conference for the 3^rd Annual Family Violence Conference “Impact of Family Violence – a South Asian Perspective”, scheduled for May 1 and 2, 2013. This conference is made possible with the support of York Regional Police, Toronto Police Services’ Community Mobilization Unit, Durham Regional Police Service, India Rainbow Centre, Peel and York Region Children’s Aid Society, United Way of Peel Region, Peel and York District School Boards, all of whom are partners in this endeavour.

Representatives from each of the agencies listed were in attendance to answer questions and speak to the upcoming conference.
