Special Achievements & Awards

Over the years, the members and staff of the Peel Regional Police have continued to research new ideas, develop new programs, and to question some of the standard practices in policing in this area. To do this they have examined methods and programs used by other agencies, and operating and management principles current in the business and manufacturing world. We are noted as a leader in our field, and on occasion our desire to shake the paradigm has led to recognition by our peers and others.

1994

In 1994, Peel Regional Police was accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) the first police service in Ontario to receive this distinction and only the fifth in Canada.

1995

The next year, Peel Regional Police won the prestigious Webber Seavey Award for quality in law enforcement sponsored by the International Association of Chiefs of Police and Motorola. The service also captured a Certificate of Merit in 1995 in the National Quality Institute's (NQI) "Canada Awards of Excellence" program: (Government category), the first government service to be so recognized. If the CALEA accreditation confirmed Peel Regional Police was doing the right things, the NQI award demonstrated Peel Regional Police was doing things right.

1997

In 1997, Peel Regional Police's Crime Prevention Services was honoured by the International Society of Crime Prevention Practitioners (ISCPP) with the Unit of the Year Award. Also in that year, the Ontario Crime Commission recognized the success of the High Enforcement Action Team (Heat) unit. The special unit was setup to reduce the numbers of motor vehicle thefts.

1998

In 1998, the American Society of Industrial Security (ASIS) recognized Peel Regional Police for its role in developing Chantel's Place, an innovative sexual assault and domestic violence suite, at Trillium Health Centre's Mississauga site.

1999

In 1999, Peel Regional Police celebrated 25 years as a Regional Police Service. Celebrations included the Chief's Levee, an employee family picnic, and a Gala Dinner.

2000

Youth issues have become a primary focus for our organization; full deployment in 2000 of our new Youth Education Unit.

2001

Hosted 50th Anniversary Ontario Chiefs of Police Association Conference, Partner with Peel District and Dufferin Peel Catholic School Boards implementing Internet safety "cyberproof" program, Developed crime prevention strategy resulting in 17 relationships with internet service providers and public network administrators to promote Internet safety and deal with emerging trends in crimes involving or using technology.

2002

Corporate Vision Statement - On May 11, 2002, Peel Regional Police introduced and launched our corporate vision statement of "A Safer Community".

2003

Emergency Response Units (ERU) created at each Division - Officers available to respond immediately to emergency calls when divisional patrol units are not available. When not responding to calls, ERU officers are engaged in proactive community enforcement.

Divisional Traffic Units established - Work in collaboration with centralized traffic services, focusing on divisional traffic concerns, specifically enforcement in community safety zones and school zones, resolution of local neighbourhood traffic issues, and response to traffic concerns and complaints.

2004

Emil V. Kolb Centre for Police Excellence - The new police facility located at 180 Derry Road East, was completed on time and under budget. Official ground opening ceremony and dedication took place on May 5, 2004. This facility houses many of Peel Regional Police's specialized units, including the Homicide and Missing Persons bureau, Fraud bureau, Commercial Auto Crime bureau, and Victim Services of Peel.

2005

Re-Accreditation was Granted by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (C.A.L.E.A.) - In August 2005, an in-depth assessment of Peel Regional Police's policies and operations was conducted. In addition to being re-accredited, Peel Regional Police was awarded "Flagship Status" which acknowledges the most successful C.A.L.E.A. accredited public safety agencies for their expertise and achievement. Peel Regional Police is the first police agency in Canada to receive this distinction of "Flagship Status".

School Police Emergency Action Response (S.P.E.A.R.) -  This joint initiative with the Peel District School Board and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board was developed to remain proactive to school security and emergency preparedness. This program is designed to provide police personnel with immediate and critical information necessary to assist with responding to violent and/or large scale school incidents such as chemical spills, bomb threats and armed suspects. Initially released in November 2004, the first annual update process commenced in 2005 to ensure information regarding schools was current and accurate.

Youth Intervention Program - This program has been initiated in high schools to identify high-risk youth and those that are likely to re-offend, as well as designated youths that are affiliated with gang activities. The program is designed to monitor these individuals' activities and to provide references for community resources as required.

2006

Mobile Data Units (MDU) - Implementation of the Mobile Data Unit system occurred in 2006 in all patrol police vehicles. The MDU provides enhanced dispatch capabilities and automated vehicle location using the Global Positioning System. The MDU's have improved officer effectiveness, efficiency and safety by providing officers with enhanced access to numerous police databases, mug shots and in-car mapping systems.

2007

Addressing Gangs - In November 2007, the new S.T.E.P. Program (Strategic Tactical Enforcement Policing) was implemented to proactively reduce incidents of gang violence and enhance public safety. The focus of this program is to develop community-based projects to dismantle gangs and conduct street level enforcement in identified problem areas.

New Mission & Values Statement - After a comprehensive review and input process, a new Mission and Values Statement was developed. The new Mission Statement reflects the leadership role that Peel Regional Police will undertake when working with our community to achieve our goals. Our Values Statement, T.R.U.S.T. reflects the core values of Peel Regional Police and provides our members with guidance and good judgment in solving ethical problems.

2008

Better Lights - Safer Vehicles - Peel Regional Police are proud to roll out Ontario's first police cruiser equipped with intermittent blue lights in its emergency lighting packaging. Cruisers have been retrofitted by adding the blue light to the existing red and white lights in the roof, grill and dash light systems. Research shows that blue light is more visible at night and during the day, and enhances visibility under bad weather conditions such as rain, fog and snow. This initiative, developed by Peel Regional Police members, Mr. Scott Lindsay, Sergeant Gary Carty and Constable Ken Wright, is being followed by all police agencies in Ontario, and has the unanimous support of the Ministry of Transportation, Ministry of Community Safety & Correctional Services, Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, Ontario Coroner's Office and the Police Association of Ontario.

"New Look" - Cruisers & Uniforms

New Look Initiative - In January 2008, the light blue shirt, worn by uniform officers, was replaced with a dark coloured shirt consistent with other police services in Ontario. The traffic vests and raincoats were also changed to a lime green color, providing greater visibility for officers.

Vehicle Decal Redesign - Using ideas submitted by members of Peel Regional Police, a survey was conducted to obtain feedback from the membership on the redesign of its fleet of marked police cruisers, and to vote for the winning design. The first newly decaled and modern-looking cruiser was revealed to the public on July 14, 2008.

Changes To The Organizational Chart - The addition of two new Deputy Chiefs to the organization.

2009

Supporting Future Police Leaders - Youth In Policing Initiative (YIPI) - Peel Regional Police welcomed 10 summer students under YIPI which is funded by the Provincial Ministry of Children and Youth Services. YIPI is designed to strengthen relationships with youth by providing a positive learning and mentoring environment, and to promote policing as a career. In its inaugural year at Peel Regional Police, the students indicated they gained valuable life skills.

New Joint Use Facility (21 Division) - Under one roof, the community will now be able to access regional and policing services. In April 2009, the new facility, which houses 21 Division and other Region of Peel programs and services, was opened. In our commitment to environmentally responsible practices, the new facility obtained a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) basic designation for environmental efficiency.

2010

Attaining Level 2 Certification Excellence Canada's Progressive Excellence Program (PEP) entitled "Integrated Quality and Healthy Workplace" (formerly National Quality Institute (NQI) Certification) - Excellence Canada is a not-for-profit organization that provides strategic focus and direction for Canadian organizations to achieve excellence. As part of certification, Excellence Canada staff identified a number of best practices at Peel Regional Police, including the Management Action Plan System, the Peer Support Program, and the Early Intervention Program. Overall, Excellence Canada identified Peel Regional Police as a role-model for a Police Services organization. We are the only police service with certification in this PEP program.

Launching On-line Public Reporting - Introduced in October 2010, Peel Regional Police is making it easier for the public to report minor occurrences such as Thefts, Mischief and Lost Property by providing a new on-line public reporting system. On-line reporting will reduce the amount of paperwork required by front-line officers and Community Station personnel as occurrences are entered directly into the Records Management System. Community Station personnel will continue to accept walk-in and phone-in occurrences.

2011

Greater Toronto's Top Employers - In November 2011, Peel Regional Police was named one of Greater Toronto's Top Employers for 2012 by Media Corp. Canada.  This annual award recognizes the most desirable employers that offer progressive and forward-thinking programs for their employees.

IALEIA Award - Peel Regional Police received an International Association of Law Enforcement Intelligence Analysts IALEIA Award, the 2010 Professional Service Award, in Category 1A. This award is to the organization making the most significant progress utilizing intelligence analytical techniques to support law enforcement objectives.

2012

Award for Youth Employer - on September 25, 2012, Peel Regional Police was named one of Canada's Top Employers for Young People for 2012 by Mediacorp Canada. This annual award recognizes organizations that lead the nation in attracting and retaining younger employees. PRP was selected based on our commitment to employee wellness, a variety of in-house and online training programs, formal mentoring, career planning services and tuition subsidies.

2013

Greater Toronto's Top Employers - Peel Regional Police is pleased has been recognized as one of Greater Toronto's Top Employers for 2013 by Mediacorp. Canada. This announcement follows the same distinction earned by Peel Police for 2012.

Award for Youth Employer - on September 24, 2013, Peel Regional Police was named one of Canada's Top Employers for Young People for 2013 by Mediacorp Canada. This annual award recognizes organizations that lead the nation in attracting and retaining younger employees. This is the second straight year that Peel Regional Police earned this coveted distinction.

2014

Greater Toronto's Top Employers - Peel Regional Police is pleased to announce that it has been recognized as one of Greater Toronto's Top Employers for 2014 by Mediacorp. Canada. This announcement follows the same distinction earned by Peel Police for 2012 and 2013. 

In June 2014, PRP achieved Level 4 Gold Certification and the Canada Award for Excellence in the Excellence Canada "Integrated Quality and Healthy Workplace" program. In achieving these awards, Excellence Canada recognized PRP as a world class organization committed to excellence, innovation, quality, leadership, workplace wellness and customer experience. These achievements speak to the continuous improvement that has taken place throughout the organization over the past seven years.
