Introduction
The following "CyberProofed?" program implementation guidelines are included for your consideration and convenience. These guidelines are based on methodologies proven to be successful within the Region of Peel District School Boards..
Purpose
“CyberProofed?” is an Internet safety Program designed to give students the necessary tools to help protect them from being victimized by predators on the Internet. Following these safety guidelines will also assist both students and adults from various other forms of victimization through the Internet.
"CyberProofed?" is designed for students from grades 3-10 inclusive, in three, age-appropriate programs from grades 3-5, 6-8, and 9-10.
Program Advantages
- "CyberProofed?" has been designed to meet the Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum standards.
- The program does not rely upon the students' prior knowledge or experience on the Internet.
- The program may be integrated into the current curriculum. For example, at the elementary school level, certain tasks may be completed during Language Arts.
- The success of the learning process within the school system is significantly enhanced through collaboration between educators and police for the program delivery. The police attendance has been identified as an important factor in reinforcing the Internet Safety message with the students.
School Level Implementation
- Elementary School Program Pre-Delivery:
- At the school level, the Principal/Vice-Principal can discuss the implementation process with the teachers.
- Before the program is implemented in a school, ensure that the school and Police have established a date and time for the assembly-format delivery by the Police Officer.
- Prior to the Police visit, the teacher should ensure that the students have completed the previous tasks.
- During the school visit, the Police review the Internet Safety Points with the students, followed by Questions and Answer. (Preferably, PowerPoint or similar program should be utilized.)
- To reinforce the safety message, the "CyberProofed?" guidelines and materials should be provided to the parents, through the school. The materials are available through the participating Police Officer.
- Secondary School Program Pre-Delivery:
- The Principal or designate will ensure the participating group completes the pre-program questionnaire and provides the results to the participating Police Officer.
- The Principal and Police will establish a mutually convenient date and time for the group-format delivery by the Police Officer.
- During the school visit, the Police will review the Internet Safety Points with the students, followed by a question and answer period. (Preferably, PowerPoint or similar program should be utilized.)
