Task 2 : Discussion Activities
Suggested Review Questions and Activities
- What are some words that you think of when you hear the word "Internet"?
- Think of ways to classify the words brainstormed in the above question. Introduce words relating to the expectations if students have not already done so. (See Glossary of Internet Terms.) Distribute handout entitled Definitions List (personal Internet dictionary). e.g. cache, chat, cookie, download, email, netiquette, search engine, ID theft, IM, Blog, Webcams, P2P, IP address, VC, Firewall, personal information, messaging software, virus. Students could create a word web or mind map, working in partners or small groups to complete this activity.
- Survey the class to determine how many students have had access to the Internet in the past week/month/year and graph results.
"In the past month, what are some of the things that you have done on the Internet?" Use student responses as a springboard for discussion of various aspects of Internet Use: (chat rooms and messaging software (e.g. MSN), email, online shopping, MySpace, Facebook, Flicker, games, determine validity.
Discussion Questions:
- What kind of potentially dangerous situations have you or someone you know encountered online? What should you do to protect yourself from dangers on the Internet?
SuggestedActivity:
- Create an Internet Safety poster for people your age, and/or create a brochure for your classmates on Internet Safety
