Task 2 : Caught in the Web Pre-viewing Activities

Suggested Pre-Viewing Questions and Activities

  1. What are some words that you think of when you hear the word "Internet"?

  2. Think of ways to classify the words brainstormed in the above question.

  3. Introduce words relating to the expectations if students have not already done so. (see Glossary of Internet Terms). Distribute handout entitled Word Web (personal interest dictionary).
    e.g. cache, chat, cookie, download, e-mail, netiquette, search engine, WWW (world wide web), personal information, messaging software, virus.

    Students may work in partners or small groups to complete this activity.

  4. Survey the class to determine how many students have had access to the Internet in the past week/month/year and graph results.

    "In the past month, what are some of the things that you have used the Internet for?"
    Use students reponses as a springboard for discussion of various aspects of Internet Use:
    • chat rooms and messaging software (ICQ)
    • e-mail
    • online shopping
    • virtual tours
    • games
    • accessing information


Discussion Questions:

  • What kind of potentially dangerous situations do you have to be aware of when you are on the Internet?

  • What could you do to protect yourself from dangers on the Internet?

VIDEO INTRODUCTION:
"Sometimes we may think that everything about the Internet is safe and sound. But as we will see in the video, we need to learn to be aware of some of the dangers that can be found as we surf the World Wide Web! As you watch the video try to remember one or two important rules that you would like your friends and family to follow as they travel in Cyberspace."

VIEW VIDEO "CAUGHT IN THE WEB"

If time does not permit Task 3 to immediately follow viewing of the video, then take a few minutes to review the pre-viewing discussion questions once again with your class.

Caught in the Web: Staying Safe in Cyberspace

Caught in the Web presents important computer safety tips in an entertaining, informative style that parents and children will enjoy. Join the Hutcheson family as they learn a valuable lesson in cybersafety.

Arriving home to their ransacked home, they discover that the theft is tied to information given out on their personal computer! Cyber Detective Dotcom helps Craig Hutcheson travel back in time to understand the events that led to the burglary, in a bold attempt to solve the crime. Craig and cybersleuth Dotcom must outwit evildoers, travel through a dangerous virus swarm and unravel the mystery before time runs out and they are Caught in the Web!
