This is my last year of high school and I want to become a police officer when I have successfully completed university. I was wondering what courses I should take in order to increase my chances of becoming an officer.

The PARQ (Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire) is a questionnaire that will be completed on the day of testing prior to participating in the physical test.
The PARMEDX (Physical Activity Readiness Medical Examination) is to be completed and signed by a physician prior to the selected test dates for applicants 40 years of age or older, and for applicants diagnosed with high blood pressure before they will be permitted to participate in the physical test.

Yes. You should be aware of the following:

1. The approximate tuition fee at this time is seven thousand five hundred dollars ($7,500.00). This is subject to change based upon the discretion of the Ontario Police College administration.
2. The tuition fee covers the cost of books, meals and residence while attending Ontario Police College. You're expected to stay in residence from Monday to Friday.
3. Your recruiting officer will explain in more detail the financing options and assistance.

Initial training is approx. twenty (20) weeks. This includes local procedures training and training at the Ontario Police College. Successful recruits are sworn in as Police constables and assigned to a division and coach officer(s) for an additional 3 to 6 months of training.

The minimum requirements for special units is usually first class constable with at least 5 years experience. Most positions within the Peel Regional Police are filled through open competition.

Applicants must possess vision which is no worse than 20/40 (6:12) combined and correctable to 20/20 (6:6) with glasses or contact lenses.

No degree of red/green colour deficiency is accepted.

The decision to undergo corrective eye surgery is a personal one. On the date of your application you must:

• Meet our minimum vision standard.
• Be able to verify that your corrective eye surgery was completed a minimum of six months prior to applying.
• Be able to verify that you have experienced no visual health problems during the past six months.

Possess hearing within the normal range, unaided.
Hearing loss must be no worse than 25 decibels between 500 Hz and 4000 Hz as measured by an audiometer.

There is no concrete answer to this question. The selection process is complex and therefore will take some time. Should an applicant not be successful in any part of the selection process, there may be a required waiting period of up to 1 year before being eligible to try again. Results of other Police Services interviews and other areas of testing are also considered and will determine if there is a waiting period before you know if you are successful or may re-apply.

1. Application submitted - test date selected.

2. Download or obtain the following forms: PARQ, PARMEDX, Vision form and Personal History Form.
   
   Applicants 40 years of age or older, and applicants diagnosed with high blood pressure MUST bring the PARMEDX form completed and signed by a physician on their selected test date or they will not be permitted to participate in the physical testing..
   
   
   Note:
   BOTH the vision form and the PARMEDX form MUST have the official office stamp and/or label of the attending physician/optometrist.
   
   (You need to show proof of vision compliance before you are invited for a behavioural specific interview with a recruiting officer - see item 6 below)

3. Complete the academic (Analytical Reasoning, Intellectual Reasoning) and physical tests on your selected test date.  NOTE: You must pass each individual test component to advance to the next stage of testing. 

4. Submit your completed Personal History form on the day of your written test.

5. Attend a behavioural specific interview with a Recruiting Bureau Investigator.

6. Complete a Competency Assessment Test (Psychological Testing).

7. Background investigation (includes Credit Bureau inquiry) conducted by a Recruiting Bureau Investigator.

8. Final Selection Board interview.

9. Final medical examination by Peel Regional Police designated medical practitioners.

Depending on our hiring environment, the duration of our application process may vary.

There are no particular university courses which would provide a clear advantage to you. What is important to a Recruiting Bureau Investigator is the effort required to obtain a degree. It is important to consider that positions within the Police service are limited and are very competitive. It may be beneficial to choose a field of interest which parallels Law Enforcement, yet could also assist you in a non-policing career, in the event you are unsuccessful in your ambition to become a police officer.

Examples are, but not limited to, Criminology, Sociology and Psychology.

Recruiting Bureau Investigators also like to see applicants who contribute to and are involved in their community.
