HONOR RETIRING POLICE CHIEF
Andrew Herkes Wins Recognition For Long and Faithful Service

Greeted On Appearance At Rose Bowl With Loud And Enthusiastic Ovation – Received Gifts At Friday Ceremony Arranged By Commerce Chamber

At a special ceremony last Friday evening at the Rose Bowl, retiring Chief of Police Andrew Herkes was presented with a purse containing almost $1,000. The evening was recognized by Brampton citizens as “Chief Herkes Appreciation Night” which marked the retirement of the veteran Chief after 34 years of continuous service to the town.

The gala evening began at 7:30 p.m. with a novice lacrosse game followed by a Pee-Wee and Bantam game. After the Bantam game was over, the Brampton Citizens’ Band circled the play-field of the Rose Bowl followed by Chief Herkes, and members of the senior Excelsior lacrosse team and the old boys.

The program, which had been arranged by the Brampton Chamber of Commerce, was under the able direction of Gordon Umphrey who acted as master of ceremonies. Crown Attorney A. G. Davis K.C., in a few well chosen remarks paid sincere tribute to the retiring Chief. “The lot of a police officer is not an easy one, but Chief Herkes has done an excellent job for the citizens of this town and especially for the young people to whom he has given good advice and saved from entering our courts. He has always used sound common sense and has always been fair when dealing with accused persons in court.”

At the conclusion of the Crown Attorney’s remarks Col. R. V. Conover presented the Chief with a framed testimonial, inscribed as follows: “The Citizens of Brampton through the Chamber of Commerce wish to express to you, Andrew Herkes Esquire, their grateful thanks and appreciation for 34 years faithful and loyal service as Chief Constable of the Town of Brampton. Dated this third day of September, 1948. Signed Gordon Umphrey, President; E.G. Stephens, Secretary, Brampton Chamber of Commerce.

Following this presentation, Mr. Harry McKillip, who has been a merchant in the town of Brampton for 50 years, was given the honour of presenting the purse to the retiring Chief on behalf of the citizens of Brampton. A third presentation was made by Mr. W. A. Beatty of the Excelsior Lacrosse Club, who gave the Chief a life-time pass to attend any lacrosse game held in the town.

In a few well chosen remarks Chief Herkes thanked the citizens of Brampton and the Chamber of Commerce for their gifts, and assured the people of Brampton who turned out in large numbers to give their thanks to the Chief, that he would always take a keen interest in the town of Brampton and especially the lacrosse team.

Also adding his appreciation for the work done by Chief Herkes, was Gordon Graydon, who sent the following wire from Sutton:

“Hope to be able to attend at the Rose Bowl tonight but in case wanted to send you this personal am prevented from doing so I just wire of deep appreciation of the faithful loyal and outstanding service you have rendered the citizens of Brampton and to wish you many years of health and happiness.” (sic)

After the presentation a lacrosse game was played between the Excelsior Old Boys and the present senior team. The “old-timers” oddly enough, came out on top of the engagement by a score of 8-6.
